“MOVING PEOPLE” TO PERFORM CLIMATE CHANGE MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE ON VERMONT STATEHOUSE LAWN IN MONTPELIER

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 @ 3:00 UNDER THE GOLDEN DOME
FREEPORT, BAHAMAS    September 25, 2011    MoreOnArt

Same Planet Productions, in partnership with HigherMind Mediaworks, announces the release of Moving People, a film of a performance set to the words of BillMcKibben, founder of 350.org, an international grassroots movement dedicated to solving the climate crisis.

The video documents a dance created for Moving Planet, a worldwide day of action on September 24 organized by 350.org. The dance is acall to action inspired by a speech by McKibben. The choreography animates his compelling description of the effect of a steadily heating planet, conveying the urgency and immediacy of the need for radical change. The speech, the music, and the dance together invite viewers to put themselves in motion for Moving Planet on September 24 as well as to join the larger movement to fight global warming.

“I knew when I heard Bill McKibben’s speech at this spring’s Power Shift conference that his words contained the cadence and power to drive a performance piece,” explains Artistic Director and Choreographer Debbie New. “I heard his words as the text for a music and movement piece that would motivate others to get involved.”

McKibben’s direct appeal to artists to engage in the movement sparked an artistic collaboration. “He said we need bodies, creativity, and spirit,” New recalls. “He invited us to fight with art, to work with a different currency than the money that tends to dominate political activity and environmental policy.”

New extended this invitation to other Vermont artists. Peter Nielsen of HigherMind Mediaworks joined as Producer. Sound Engineer ColinMcCaffrey and Composer Brian Boyes, both of Plainfield, created the soundtrack to Moving People. Using McKibben’s speech, McCaffrey remixed the audio and Boyes incorporated it into an original musical composition. Seven dancers rehearsed the piece choreographed by New, joined by others who run, leap, and bike through the dance. The performance was filmed and edited by HigherMind Mediaworks Video Production Director Jaime Williams in Flemer Field in Waitsfield on the eve of Hurricane Irene.

The result is Moving People, both a live performance and a film. The dance will be performed at Moving Planet on September 24 on the State House lawn in Montpelier @3:00. The film is available for viewing at sameplanetproductions.com and highermindmedia.com.
